Visit Places in Gwalior

Home to the pearl of Indian fortresses, The Gwalior Fort, Gwalior is a medieval majesty. The city has been ruled by many great North Indian rulers like Tomars, Mughals, Marathas and Scindias. The proud realm of each of these dynasties has left Gwlior dotted with immense architectural heritage. Gwalior is one of the chief tourist attractions in Madhya Pradesh owing to its marvelous temples, remarkable palaces and National Parks and a river sanctuary.

High rocky hills fringe the city from all sides. Gwalior holds an unprecedented reputation in music as it is he birthplace of the oldest Indian Sangeet form which is the oldest form in the country. This city is also the burial ground of Tansen, the best musician of his time.

Gwalior Fort

Timings: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Best time to visit: Sunset

Laid down by the Tomara dynasty, Gwalior fort was reputedly described as ‘The pearl in the necklace of the forts of Hind’. The fort is built on top of a steep hill and is protected by high strong walls. The fort was believed to be unbreachable.


Jal Vilas Mahal

Timings: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Best time to visit: Early afternoon

Once home to Scindias, the Maratha rulers of Gwalior, Jai Vilas Palace has been turned into a museum today. Located in the heart of the city, the museum features some of the rarest ancient gadgets and other antiques which are of high cultural importance.


Sun Temple

A magnificent temple dedicated to the Sun God, Surya is one of the major pilgrimage sites in the city. The temple is exceptionally well-maintained and has a serene and green garden around it. Tourists as well as locals throng the temple complex each evening in search of peace and to escape the hustle and bustle just for a small bit of time.


Gwalior Zoo

The Gwalior zoo, officially named as Gandhi Zoological Park and is one of the most happening and fascinating zoological parts in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The park is home to many species of animals and birds including hyena, bison, white tigers, golden pheasants, sambhar, serpents and many more.
